This concentrated cookery course is for young people who want to learn essential cooking skills before heading off to university or leaving home for the first time.
You will learn nifty knife skills and a range of dishes that incorporate a variety of cooking techniques. We will keep an eye on budget and we will also make sure the dishes are balanced and healthy. You will learn to cook and eat well yourself, and be able to entertain friends and family with simple, delicious, well cooked and well presented dishes.
Day 1 am: Pizza from scratch. It’s surprisingly easy to make your own pizza and so much cheaper than ordering in! We will make two batches of dough and turn the second batch into bread rolls.
Day 1 pm: Beef ragu and meatballs. We will learn essential kitchen knife skills, chopping onions and vegetables and creating a ragu sauce that can be turned into chilli con carne, bolognaise sauce or cottage pie. A very versatile dish. Vegetarians can just leave out the meat and add extra vegetables or substitute with quorn or lentils. We will also make meatballs and a delicious tomato sauce.
Day 2 am: Curry and rice. Choose a chicken or vegetarian option and learn to use spices to create a delicious curry. And we will cook rice so that you never need to boil in the bag again.
Day 2 pm: Street food and stir fry. We will make Mexican quesadillas and a simple but delicious stir fry.
Day 3 am: Eggs – we will make pancakes which can be turned into a sweet or savoury dish; and the perfect omelette
Day 3 pm: We finish the course with a selection of healthy, tasty snacks and simple dishes for lunch on the go
Our goal is to make you a competent cook, able to work with wholesome fresh ingredients to create delicious and healthy meals on a budget. If we succeed, you need never look a ready meal in the eye again!
This is a three day course. We will have our morning dishes for lunch and you will take home the afternoon dishes. Please arrive by 9.20am and bring two airtight containers to take home your food. All ingredients are provided.
